What is Sustainable Agriculture?

Sustainable Agriculture is a way of raising food that is healthy for consumers, does not harm the environment, respects animals, provides a fair wage to the farmer, and supports and enhances rural communities.

Sustainable Farming Benefits

  1. feeding the goatThe waste from Sustainable Farming stays within the farm’s ecosystem in order to build soil health and retain carbon. Using the symbiosis that occurs between livestock and the microscopic organisms that thrive on their wastes, the overall health of the land is improved, year by year, resulting in more nutritious and flavorful farm products.
  2. Healthier Soil promotes erosion control, healthier livestock, and a more vibrant local economy. These are based on a long term commitment to a specific place and climate rather than focusing on quick profits and unreasonable yields that are dependent on the use of petroleum products and harmful chemicals.
  3. Sustainable Agriculture minimizes transportation costs and fossil fuel use. It is intended to serve a local market so that everything is fresh and seasonal.
  4. Sustainable Farming helps in the control of disease outbreaks, polluted water supplies, and unpleasant odors long considered to be a given in larger farming operations. The farm is first and foremost a home to a farming family dedicated to providing for themselves and their neighbors, not to making a profit by wholesaling to large chains that ship to distant markets.
  5. Sustainable Farm Animals are treated humanely and with respect to their nature. They are are well cared for and live in an environment that is neither crowded nor unsanitary. The result is a finished product that tastes fresh and is filled with healthful sustenance. By pasturing animals in rotation, each species and breed eats exactly the type of feed and fodder they require to reach full vigor and health.

Learn about our Farm’s History.

Each year we expand our harvestable acreage through the use of sustainable methods, retaining carbon through the rotation of our animals across the fields, and through the application of natural composts with intervals of rested pasture to renew the land.

We also strive to preserve the natural habitats of local wildlife, to improve water quality by preserving wetlands that cross our farm, and by replanting and reforestation of our non-pastured acreage.

No Pesticides or Chemical Fertilizers

We use neither pesticides, nor do we apply chemical fertilizers, allowing the land to be rejuvenated with practices that have been in use for thousands of years.

While we consider our products to be beyond organic, we prefer to stay away from the government trademark and its intrusive and often deceptive practices that allow even huge industrial operations to call themselves Organicâ„¢. If you want to see just how we do what we do, we encourage you to stop by and see for yourselves the source of our products in their natural environment. We are proud to feed our children the food we grow here and we know you’ll be equally proud to serve it to your own family and friends.
